Today begins National Hispanic Heritage Month, a time for us to celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of our Hispanic and Latino communities.
The observance began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 and expanded to a month in 1988. Its September 15 opening honors the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, followed closely by those of Mexico, Chile, and Belize.
In Framingham, this month is an opportunity to celebrate the languages, stories, arts, leadership, labor, and family traditions of our diverse Hispanic and Latino communities, while remembering that no single label or experience represents everyone. Our schools are stronger because these histories live here.
